Oil Painting Portrait and Early Portrait Photography Styles?
Why do gentlemen place their hand in their coat in 18th and 19th century portrait paintings and also in early photographs? Also, why do they not smile? I suspect I am going to get some creative answers (from some) but I could use historically correct answers, if possible. Thanks.
I really cannot answer with fact, I can only assume. I think it was customary for that period, as it gave an air of distinction.
